Why the Excess 12 Catamaran is the ideal boating choice for you

Since making its debut in 2019 at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Excess 12 Catamaran has not only been named the Best Mid-Size Catamaran by Cruising World but has also been granted the title of Multihull of the year by Multihulls World magazine. And it’s for good reason.

The Ethos of Excess

The ethos of Excess is simple. To break conventions and create a catamaran that was built for performance and designed for sailors to enjoy. It provides the perfect on-water lifestyle and offers voyagers everything they need in a midsize boat.

Just imagine. Enjoying the thrill of Sailing. Dropping anchor. Swimming, diving, surfing, reading, laughing, living for the moment and then setting sail again. On repeat. All summer. Sounds pretty good to me!

Sleeping 6 people, the Excess allows you to bring the whole family, or gather a group of friends and comfortably enjoy the water without feeling crowded. This has a lot to do with the Port hull which is devoted to the owner’s cabin. Another two full double berths to Starboard also help to make this boat the ideal entertainer or family catamaran. Everyone has their own space.

There is also the enjoyment of sitting in the comfortable seat on the foredeck. The magical feeling of wind blowing through your hair while watching the scenes of the open ocean go by is truly special.

The twin helm stations aft deliver a sailing experience not normally associated with Catamarans. It delivers great visibility for both the captain and passengers alike. Not only do the twin helms give the captain greater peace of mind while sailing, it means everyone on board is able to form greater connections to the water no matter where they are sitting.

Design that doesn’t Compromise Function

With unique and graceful lines, it’s easy to be carried away by the chic design that is the Excess 12 Catamaran. Every element has been carefully created to allow you to fully live the experience of the boat, bringing a breath of fresh air to the world of cruising catamarans.

Compared to many of its competitors, the Excess 12 really has great space in the saloon, and includes a large gallery on the port side. A deep sink, three burner hob/oven and sizeable fringe plus oodles of cupboard space make this boat more than a mere weekender.

The volume comes from the vertical external bulkheads. They allow for an airy atmosphere inside the cabin no matter the weather.

The main saloon offers a great connection to the cockpit. The coach house roof is high, and the vertical, untinted windows provide for superb vision all around, from the helm seat to the nav desk, the cockpit to the gallery. All drawing on the sensation aspect that this boat offers, ensuring that no matter where you are, you experience the enjoyment of being on the water.

Excess 12 Catamaran Inside

There are so many great aspects of this boat, which is a huge reason why it was not a huge shock when she was named the Best Midsize Cruising Catamaran by Cruising World in 2020.

Award winner

Excess. Or does it?

This was the primary question to be answered by judges when determining which boat would be named Best Midsize Catamaran.

With some stiff competition, the judges decided that the 38-foot-9inch Excess 12 was the purer sailing boat among them.

Speaking on what he enjoyed most about the boat, judge Ralph Naranjo said, “I like having the controls and the main living space on the vessel all on the same level.”

“You have nice continuity between the main saloon and the cockpit. The off watch is only a few steps away from the helm and all the action. And I like the overall workmanship. It really performed in the heavy air” he said.

Celebration continued

The accolades for the Excess 12 Catamaran continued after it won the title of Best Midsize Cruising Catamaran by Cruising World.

The award-winning boat was also given the title of Multihull of the Year by Multihulls World Magazine. This was largely due to its unique twin helm layout, an open and airy floor plan, and the 3 to 4 staterooms that are perfect for sleeping the whole family or hosting friends.
